Want To Start Your Business But Struggling Financially? Here Are Some Tips

Unless you want to be working till the day you die, starting a business is the best way to start planning for your retirement. Many people choose to invest in stocks or buy a property or create wealth in some other way, but a business gives you the opportunity to work, to have the freedom of being a business owner, and also to make a lot of money.

Starting a business can be a challenging task, and it is no secret that the majority of startups fail quite early on.  It’s only a very small percentage that flourishes into large, successful businesses. The main hurdle in building a business, for most people, is the initial capital. Starting with zero, or close to zero, investment is difficult, but not impossible. Here are a few tips to help you get started with a business on a tight budget.

Services You Can Offer

You will need money to start. You need to buy inventory, you need to market, you need to hire people, and the list of expenses goes on. One of the best places to start making money is through a service business where you are the expert who is rendering the services. This requires very little capital in most cases, and you can get started right away.

All you need to do is find something that you can do that people will be willing to pay money for. This can be as simple as gardening or as complicated as writing code, but this is the time to cash in on your skills. If you want to spend some time learning a more profitable skill, then do that and then start selling your services. This will help you come up with the capital required to start your dream business.

Free Services You Can Use

Even to sell services, you will need to market yourself and start interacting with customers and other stakeholders in the business. At this stage, you should be looking at free options to market yourself. If you have the internet available, there are countless online platforms that will let you register for free and market yourself, but they will take a commission from the sales you make.

However, this is better than having no platform at all. Moreover, they will give you some credibility. Asking random people to buy your services, it’s not the most efficient way. Through online platforms, you get access to a reliable clientele, and you also get to showcase yourself more professionally.

External Funding

If there is no way you can start without money, and you need at least a small amount to start (if for instance you need to get licensing, or you need to get some basic marketing material made)  consider applying for a grant.

There are plenty of Canadian-based companies that are offering business grants and also many companies that provide this service. To be eligible for start up grants, you will need to provide some documentation of the business you want to start, and it would help if you have a good personal resume to go with it. The amount that you will be able to get depends on the industry that you are in and how good your credentials are.

Available Items You Can Sell

If you own certain items of value, you can turn these into quick cash. You can easily sell your things online and earn a good profit. Online platforms such as Etsy and Craigslist ask for no commission. Trading through these platforms is completely free, so you keep all the profit you earn.

Your Network

If raising capital is the hurdle, then consider reaching out to friends and family to see if they can help out financially. You can strike up a deal with them for a loan, so you aren’t taking the money, you are just borrowing it till you can pay them back.

This is the easiest way to raise capital without getting involved with lots of documentation and paperwork. You already have a level of trust with them, so you can leverage this to quickly get your business off the ground.

Get People Involved

If it’s human capital that you lack, then consider giving people a share in your business in exchange for their services. This way you can get people on board quickly, and you don’t have to worry about salaries. You can better progress when you have a team put together than you would trying to manage everything on your own.

A big part of being successful in business is being able to address a need that is actually profitable. Consumer needs and market needs are changing quickly. You need to identify an area where there is money to be made and something that you can do well, and cash in on that. Pursuing something that you are passionate about won’t be profitable if no one wants to buy that product or service.
