So many blogs and articles about electromagnetic fields (EMF) radiation claim that consumers need to buy a laundry list of things to protect themselves, but that’s not reality. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends using the TDS method of protection. That stands for Time, Distance, and Shielding, and the first two preventative measures cost nothing to implement, while the third costs little.
Why Do EMFs Matter?
Science and medicine don’t yet know the effect of EMFs on the human body. As a precaution and because it’s a form of radiation, the World Health Organization created guidelines for device manufacture. Each nation sets its standards and enforces them. Device manufacturers apply these guidelines and standards when making devices, indicated by the statement on the packaging that reads, “This product meets current FCC Radio Frequency Emission Exposure Guidelines.”
EMF Radiation Sensitivity
Science has documented some individuals who experience emissions sensitivity. That means those individuals experience effects from EMFs that other people don’t. Think of it as an allergy; some individuals might have a gluten allergy or an allergic reaction to peanuts. These individuals need to more vehemently implement TDS to protect themselves.
Reducing Time Spent Using EMF Radiating Devices
Reducing the amount of time spent using an EMF-emitting device helps alleviate potential effects. Some easy ways to do this include:
• Place a cellphone or tablet in airplane mode anytime you’re not using the data plan or talking on it.
• Purchasing stovetop cookware instead of electric cookware, such as a stovetop tea kettle instead of an electric hot pot or teapot.
• Unplugging devices when not using them.
Besides reducing EMF radiation, this method also reduces energy bills.
Increasing Distance from an Emission Source
Before science had any notion that EMFs might affect humans, parents told children advice that the EPA now recommends.
• Sit a few feet away from the TV screen or computer. The EMFs a person experiences drop with small increases in distance, so sitting four feet away or more from a TV eliminates almost all emissions that reach a person. Sit 24 inches away from a laptop screen or desktop monitor.
• Charging cellphones in a separate room from the one in which you sleep.
• Make and receive phone calls using the speakerphone option on a cellphone or use wired headphones with a microphone for private phone conversations.
Shielding Yourself or Pets from EMFs
In medical situations, such as undergoing X-rays, a radiologist lays a lead blanket over a person to protect their body from radiation. EMFs from everyday electronics emit much lower radiation than that, so you don’t need a lead blanket. Shielding yourself doesn’t require extreme measures. Try the following ideas:
- Create an electronics-free room in your home. Spend an hour or two in it each day, reading or doing a favorite hobby. Leave your cell phone outside the room.
- Wear a coherent converter like those made by Aires Tech. These devices take up the space of a necklace charm but use nanotechnology to transform the incoherent radiation that’s foreign to the human body into a coherent, harmless form.
Carefully consider any type of shielding purchased. Some clothing and rocks sold as mitigation devices don’t work. Test it using an EMF meter, a device that costs between $30 and $700, depending on the complexity of the device.
