Effective methods for chemical-free cleaning

Washing utensils can be incredibly boring as well as damaging. The soap used for washing utensils is often strong and can leave your hands dry and cause them to crack. People with sensitive skin often find it difficult to use this soap and clean utensils.

Milder soaps cause less foam, and you may need to make an extra effort to get rid of all the grime on your utensils. Dishwash does not need to be a painful process with a corrosive chemical. Here are some chemical-free ways to get your utensils clean and keep your hands smooth and soft.

Ways to Clean your utensils by using minimal chemicals

  1. Use soap nut instead of soap– Soap Nut is an age-old naturally occurring item that has been used to clean items. Soapnut is known for its unique ability to create foam or small bubbles that actually help clean the utensils. A finely ground powder of soapnut mixed with water is enough to clean utensils.  This is a gentle cleaner that does not cause damage to the utensils and the hands of the cleaner.
  2. Use coconut coir– If you have a batch of utensils that are particularly difficult to clean because of residue or burnt bits, then instead of using an intense soap, think of using coconut coir. You can use a scouring pad too but that can be corrosive to the utensil itself. Coconut coir is naturally occurring and does not leave scratches on the surface of the vessel. This is especially important if it is a serving bowl or a glass item.
  3. Use tamarind for cleaning– Tamarind is known to be acidic. It was used in the olden days to brighten up brass and copper utensils. Soak tamarind in water for a few hours and you can use the pulp for cooking and keep the fibers. The roughness of the fibers and the acidity in the remaining pulp can help get rid of a layer of dirt and grime. The acidity is great to cut through fatty and greasy residues on utensils as well.
  4. Herbal cleaners– Use herbal dishwashing liquid to eliminate the impact of chemicals on your skin. Some chemicals can also cause extreme reactions and leave a burning sensation for the longest time. The impact of some of these chemicals may cause allergies to flare up and can ruin the physical appearance of your hands as well. Herbal dishwashing liquid is the best solution when you don’t have a lot of time and yet you don’t want to use a lot of chemicals.
  5. Use lemons for multiple benefits– A used lemon also can make a big difference to your utensils. The acidity in the lemon is great for getting rid of grease. When you have used heavy spices or any aromatic substances, it is difficult to get rid of the smell. Lemon helps with that too. When you are soaking your utensils to loosen the stuck bits, you can add lemon, even if a used one, to the water overnight and reduce the overpowering smell of food. Once your utensils are clean and you feel like the smell is still not great, you can boil the utensil with a lemon in it to take care of the smell.
  6. Vinegar and water– You can boil about 4 tablespoons of vinegar with 1 liter of water and use the mixture to clean utensils and bring their shine back. If you have smaller bits of utensils like an oil lamp or so on, you can immerse them in this mixture.
  7. Baking soda– Baking soda starts to bubble as soon as you add it to water. It is a great alternative to using harsh chemicals and can be used to get rid of any stuck or burnt food pieces. You can use a cut potato to apply the baking soda to the vessel. You can also boil water with 2 and a half tablespoons of baking soda and immerse the vessel which you want to be cleaned into the boiling water and let it boil for 30 minutes.
  8. Use salt as an abrasion– If you don’t have baking soda, you can use salt as an abrasive agent along with a lemon or a potato to get rid of any bits stuck to the vessel. Salt itself does not leave any trace on the utensils like soap and utensils can be simply rinsed once to get rid of the cleaning agent.

These methods are easier on your hands and health. A chemical-free approach is safer for people who are consuming food from utensils as well since soap may cause serious health issues when ingested even in the smallest quantities. Use these methods and enjoy a chemical-free approach to cleaning!
