Problems connecting to a share on Windows XP from OSX 10.5

I came across a problem with trying to connect to a share hosted on a Windows XP Professional machine.

I could browse for it and see the share, however whenever I tried to connect to it, it would connect as Guest. This is fine if you have the security setup so that Everybody has at least read permissions. However in this case, Guest did not have the access and we needed to use a username/password combination.

Clicking on Connect As, brought up the usual username/password box. The problem was no matter what I typed into that box it wouldn’t connect and revert back to Guest. I could even type totally bogus combinations and it would still act like it accepted it.

Eventually I found the problem by googleing it. Turns out there is a need to turn off Windows XP’s Simple File Sharing option.

To get to this follow the directions below:

1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the Advanced Settings section, click to clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.
5. Click OK.

It should now work as normal.
