Increasing Exchange 2003’s Mail Database Size

One thing I find the most infuriating with Exchange 2003 (and possibly Exchange 2007) and also the one thing that I constantly forget about and have to google, is that out of the box Exchange 2003 has a hard limit of 16gb for the size of the information store.

This basically means that the total of the priv1.edb and priv1.stm file cannot exceed 16 gigabytes.

It is frustrating because Exchange 2003 allows a total database size of 75gb, however for some unknown reason Microsoft decided to only unlock that extra space with the use of a registry hack. Say what?!?

Thankfully it is an easy thing to implement:

1. Launch the Registry Editor. i.e regedit
2. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSexchangeIS\[Servername]\Private-[Unique Code]

3. Add a REG_DWORD called “Database Size Limit in Gb” and set it anywhere from 17 to 75 decimal.
4. The Exchange services will need to be restarted.
5. If successful, you will get a notification in the Event Log under Application.
